Halloween
Date: Tuesday, 6 November 2018
Aims: To develop and practice
Vocabulary: Halloween; pumpkins, monsters, anything from the movie and story
Culture: Knowledge of Halloween, history, and significance in the United States
Art: coloring in pumpkins
Time: 110 minutes approximately
Materials:
● Story, activity sheet, answers, and transcript: ‘Dark, dark wood’
● Pumpkin coloring page printouts (enough for all students) and markers (mostly orange
and black)
Introduction (15 minutes):
Introduce the topic of Halloween, discuss the history and traditions
(using slideshow). Then go over vocab related to Halloween.
Activity One (30 minutes):
The Dark Dark Wood
● Tell learners they are going to watch a story which takes place in a very dark wood.
● Show exercise 1 of the activity sheet on the board and check learners know the
vocabulary.
● Watch the ‘Dark, dark wood’ story. Ask learners to complete exercise 2 of the activity
sheet – they can copy the words from exercise 1.
● Now watch the story again and see if learners can say the sentences along with the
story.
● Tell learners they are going to write their own version of the story! Brainstorm some
ideas of where the story can take place, for example in a dark, dark town or on a dark,
dark island. Then brainstorm ideas of what can be in that town or island, and so on.
● When you have lots of ideas, give learners exercise 3 of the activity sheet, and ask them
to complete the sentences with their own ideas to make a story, and draw a picture to
illustrate.
● Some learners might like to read their story to the class with a spooky voice. Turn off the
lights and give learners a torch to read their story to add atmosphere!
Activity Two (40 minutes): Coloring in Pumpkins
● Make a pumpkin!
● Now show learners the template for the craft pumpkin. Show examples online of Jack O
Lantern faces and how they are carved.
● Give out the template. Make sure learners come and ask you for equipment in English,
for example, orange pen, glue. Monitor and help where necessary.
● After they have made their pumpkins, ask learners to give their pumkin a name and
come up with some information about them.
● Hang up pumpkins in the room.,
Activity Three (25 minutes): Watch a clip from a Halloween Movie, “It’s the Great Pumpkin
Charlie Brown”
● Explain the significance of Charlie Brown in American culture
